Review from Michael:
The short review:
This was a great experience.
The long review:
I started looking for a suit for my late-May wedding in early-March. I'm a relatively short and slim guy (5'6", 125 lbs or so), so finding stuff off-the-rack is mostly impossible—the smallest suits you can find in the men's section are still pretty baggy and long on me even after tailoring.
I'd tried made-to-measure in the past and had a pretty miserable experience. The long waits, having to have pieces remade and waiting some more, all of that can take anywhere between 4-6 months. I went to one of the bigger Suppliers of Suits, and their selection in my size was limited to shades I didn't like, and compromises on how it would fit (super tight pants to ensure the jacket wasn't too long). I looked into that chain's options for "fully custom" suits, and the salesperson couldn't guarantee that they'd have it done in time for the wedding in 8 weeks. Moreover, even if they made the deadline, they couldn't guarantee that it wouldn't need alterations when it came back.
So, I kept looking, this time into bespoke options. Enter: La Contento.
La Contento was the first shop that not only guaranteed me that my suit would be ready by the date of my wedding (three weeks prior, actually), but that the fit would be 99% accurate. All of the five-star reviews ahead of mine gave me the confidence I needed in taking the plunge.
The fitting process was detailed. Lots of measurements, lots of questions about how I wanted the suit to fit. I chose fabrics, I chose the lapel style, I chose buttons, everything. They made assessments about my posture and shoulder heights and how it'd feel when I sat down that never would have been noticed at any of the previous places I looked.
Pricing: at the time of having my suit made, 2-piece suits started at $1600. The fabric I initially chose during my appointment came from a more-expensive collection, and when my eyes went slightly wide hearing the marginally more-expensive quote, the shop-owners found a near-identical fabric from a less-expensive collection. I elected for a 3-piece suit, which brought the price up significantly, but La Contento offered to throw in a custom shirt, socks, and tie. They even gifted me a second tie when all was said and done.
Shortly after my first appointment, La Contento called to tell me that they were out of the fabric I'd picked, and waiting for it to restock would push my ready-date to the week of the wedding. They showed me a slightly darker in-stock fabric that could ensure the original delivery date. I went back and forth, thought about taking the darker fabric, but with their assurances that alterations would almost certainly not be necessary I trusted my first choice.
And what happened? La Contento delivered.
Even with the delay, I got my suit a week ahead of their estimate, and there was no immediate need for alterations. And if I do end up needing alterations, they're free for life—the caveat being that I'd need to pay for shipping for anything after the first alteration.
I'll volunteer this about myself, which is that I know very little about men's fashion. I am not a demanding client, and for that reason I was happy to get moved through the process by the shop-owners. A lot of my responses to their questions were "Whatever you think is best." I'd be interested to hear reviews from people who have more knowledge than me, but I can say if you're not getting the fit and service you want from made-to-measure companies and department stores, spending a little more for the quality and care La Contento offers is more than worth it.
